At night loads exceeding 10 feet 3 inches (3.1 m) up to 12 feet 4 inches (3.75 m) require a lead pilot on single lane highways. On multi-lane highways a trail vehicle is required when load exceeds 12 feet 4 inches (3.75 m). Loads exceeding 14 feet 5 inches (4.4 m) require both a pilot and a trail vehicle on single lane highways. On a multi-lane highway a trail vehicle is required. HEIGHT: Where a load exceeds 14 feet 9 inches (4.5 m) a pilot vehicle is required to precede the load.
A single unit vehicle exceeding 55 feet 9 inches (17 m) requires a trail vehicle. A crane exceeding 68 feet 11 inches (21 m) requires a trail vehicle. Loads of 2 units exceeding 90 feet 3 inches (27.5 m) require a trail vehicle. Loads of 3 units (tractor, single semi trailer and one dolly) exceeding 98 feet 5 inches (30 m) for a permit class 2 require a trail vehicle.
Front overhangs exceeding 6 feet 7 inches (2 m) or rear overhang exceeding 13 feet 1 inch (4 m) for cranes require a pilot escort vehicle.
